I worked with FFAKE inc. with Producer Paul Golden and director/designer Gordon Clark to bring our main CD4 character to life. This was a large volume of animation on a quick turnaround. The animation style was cel/traditional, so any shortcuts had to be pretty well hidden. I made a quick rig for the body and animated the hands and mouth traditionally. The helmet looked like it would be a monster to animate traditionally, so I modeled a 3D helmet and rendered it with the Freestyle renderer. I tried to match the animation, and created a set up a matte pass to tuck his head into it. Compositing for the character was actually done in ToonBoom. I love their node editor.
